One of our 2020 Plano East graduates, Jacob Pellegrino, is publishing a book about music.
A sneak peek into his project:
Story of My Book
Redefining Music is a book about how music has evolved and the people who create these changes. In it, I draw connections between a wide range of musicians and genres as they influence each other to create the musical landscape we see today.
My name is Jacob Pellegrino and I am the author of Redefining Music. I wrote this book because I have a passion for music and would like to share my enthusiasm and knowledge with others. I noticed that many people do not realize the importance of the artist as music evolves and wanted to emphasize the role of the creator while helping people to hear new music by featuring artists across a wide range of genres, time periods, and backgrounds.
My hope is that, in reading this book, you will discover the distinct role of musical innovators in the evolution of music. In this book, I hope to instill in you the same sort of passion and excitement that I have for music. Ultimately, I want you to see this book as a tool to help you to better understand artists who have changed music.
In this book, you'll learn about how music changes over time and the people who drive that evolution. You'll hear stories such as...
- When Bruce Pavitt, the founder of Sub Pop Records (the label Nirvana started on), met Kurt Cobain, Kurt didn’t even talk about his band (Nirvana). His biggest claim to fame was being a roadie for the Melvins.
- Tony Iommi lost two of his fingertips when he was 17 and had to relearn how to play guitar with his fingers after creating prosthetic fingertips for them. This change deeply influenced Black Sabbath’s sound with lower tunings and a new style of playing.
- Kanye West wrote the album 808s & Heartbreak after the death of his mother and his separation from his fiancee. The album addresses West’s heavy emotions and sadness relating to those events and his troubles caused by fame by eschewing rap. Its sound and emotional openness deeply influenced rap as a genre.
